Initially, the browser compatibility element of a website was not given much importance. But now, every website aims at being compatible with all the major browsers. It is important now the website is both user friendly and browser friendly.

Internet explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera mini, Netscape Navigator etc are some of the major browsers available today. The appearance of website changes with each different browser. All the browsers give a slight different output for JavaScript, CSS, HTML, PHP etc. It is not possible that all the websites appear 100% similar in the browsers. But web developers take efforts to make them look similar as much as possible. After creating the entire website, you can always validate it through HTML validator based on W3C standards. This enhances better browser compatibility.

Avoid the use of horizontal scroll in the web page by maintaining the ideal width of the entire website. this wont annoy the users as well as it will adjust itself easily in all the browsers. Also, avoid using a number of frames. Users find it difficult to explore the websites in presence of a frame. Make minimum use of JavaScript. JavaScript is not supported by many browsers. Also, users using an older version of any browser might not be even able to see some content which is developed on JavaScript.
